Kit

Yesterday, the lawnmen came to service our yard. My sister, Kasey noticed when they got to the backyard that they were looking down at the ground. So she went out back to find out what they were looking at. It was a teeny-tiny baby raccoon. At first sight, it looks like a kitten, but then you spot the rings in the tail. Actually, baby raccoons are called kits. As soon as Kasey came inside and told me what it was, I darted for my camera. I started taking pics. The little raccoon looked hurt. It was flopping around. I thought for sure that something had happened to it and the Mama Raccoon abandoned it. The lawnmen warned me that the mama raccoon was in the tree above my head. Oh Great! My immediate reaction was to duck and run. Mama raccoon could jump on my head if I got too close to her baby. I looked up and saw mama's head peak out of the palms. She had other babies with her too. Kasey & I were worried about Kit. (In case you were wondering, we named our newborn raccoon Kit) We called at least half a dozen places and NO ONE would help us. Finally, we contacted a company that deals directly with injured wild life. They told us that a truck was on the way. Kenny arrived and rescued Kit. Kit was not hurt. Thank God! Kenny told us that Mama Raccoon just had these babies within days because Kit's eyes weren't even opened yet. Our animal rescuer, Kenny, will be back this evening to trap Mama and the rest of her babies. If we were in a more secluded area, I would just leave her alone, but this neighborhood is filled with crazy drivers, houses that are only feet away from each other, and backed by a canal that alligators frequent in the summer. Kenny is part of a no-kill animal rescue and release association. As animal lovers, we are so releived that this family of raccoons will live together in a safer wild area. Enjoy the pics of our sweet baby, Kit!
